Landslide Forces Closure of Costa Rica’s Road to Limon Again

Heavy rain triggered a landslide on Route 32 late last night, forcing authorities to close the mountain crossing used by drivers traveling between San José and Limón. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) closed the road shortly after 9 p.m. after debris fell at kilometer 28. The closure covered the stretch between the San Isidro de Heredia toll station and the Río Frío intersection.

Crews from MOPT and the National Road Council were scheduled to inspect the site this morning before deciding whether cleanup could safely begin. Authorities warned that additional material could fall during the night. No reopening time had been confirmed in the reports available Sunday morning.

The landslide came as tropical wave 50 crossed over last night. The National Meteorological Institute said the system, combined with moisture and the Intertropical Convergence Zone created conditions for heavy rain and thunderstorms. The institute’s Saturday forecast called for afternoon and evening storms across the Central Valley, Northern Zone and Pacific regions, along with scattered thunderstorms in the Caribbean mountains.

For those heading between the capital and the Caribbean, the question to be answered today is when the mountain crossing will reopen. Drivers should check MOPT’s latest road updates before leaving, while bus and shuttle passengers should confirm their departures with their operators.
