When your dental insurance lets you down … Come to Costa Rica

Many years ago, you decided to play by the rules and do everything right to protect yourself and your family. You worked hard and saved and invested in, among other things, dental insurance to make sure that you and your family are covered.

Except that when you actually need to use your insurance, the one you’ve been paying for years, for dental procedures that are much more expensive than usual, you find out that your dental insurance doesn’t cover the specific procedure you need, and it just so happens to be one that costs more than the average procedure.

Or maybe you’ve decided to improve your appearance by getting an aesthetic upgrade to improve your smile. Dental insurance rarely covers cosmetic procedures. In fact, patients seeking dental implants often discover that even restorative implants are not covered by insurance.

Dental procedures get rejected for many reasons. Some policies just don’t cover procedures that used to be rare but are now becoming common. Other times, policies consider necessary but aesthetic procedures as cosmetic, and thus not applicable, much like when your eyes need glasses but sight correction surgery might be considered cosmetic.

Maybe at the time you got the insurance you didn’t go for the expensive version with all the bells and whistles because you didn’t want to pay for extra premiums. Or maybe the dental insurance is through your employer and it’s all they offered.

For whatever reason, your dental insurance is not backing you up and you have to pay for the procedure from your own pocket or simply go with a less optimal option. Or maybe go without treatment at all.

With the advent of dental tourism, you can choose from a wide range of cosmetic and restorative dental procedures at prices that save most patients up to seventy percent on their dental care. At best, your dental insurance may cover $1,500 to $2,500 per year in basic services. This barely covers the cost for a single dental implant in the United States.  Many savvy patients are discovering the benefits of getting their dental care in Costa Rica at huge savings and then getting reimbursed for some of these procedures by their insurance when they return home.

Consider: a procedure that costs you $30,000 in the USA, may cost less than $10,000 in Costa Rica. Once you get reimbursed from your insurance company, you may pay less than $7,500 for your treatment…which would have cost you at least $27,500 in the USA. This is a huge savings and well worth a trip to Costa Rica. You can even enjoy a few days of vacation in this tropical paradise and you still end up paying much, much less.

Rest assured that a lower price does not mean that you will need to compromise on quality. The leading clinics in Costa Rica offer specialists that are members of the American Dental Association, the American Prosthodontic Society, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and other highly reputable dental organizations. You will find the same quality of care, equipment, brands, and materials that you would find at home. In fact, some of the top clinics in Costa Rica exceed the expectations of most patients, who report that these clinics have more advanced technology and training than many clinics in the USA.
