More heavy rains will hit Costa Rica’s Pacific coast this week, red alerts issued

Two more tropical waves are expected to hit Costa Rica’s Pacific coast this week. The first will hit Thursday, and the National Emergency Commission (CNE) announced a red alert for the districts of Cóbano, Lepanto and Paquera.

A yellow alert has been issued for the cantons of La Cruz, Santa Cruz, Nicoya and Nandayure, and the districts of Barranca, El Roble and Pitahaya.

The second tropical wave is expected to hit over the weekend and will primarily affect the Central Pacific, Southern Pacific and Central Valley. CNE President Alexander Solís, warned that the ground in areas such as the northwestern province of Guanacaste is still saturated due to last week’s rains.

There were 13 reported deaths throughout Central America last week due to heavy rains, including one in Costa Rica. Nearly 1,000 people were evacuated last Friday after heavy rains led to flooding in Guanacaste and Puntarenas. There were also landslides reported throughout the country.
