U.S. congratulates Carlos Alvarado on his victory in Costa Rica

The U.S. State Department congratulated Costa Rica’s president-elect, Carlos Alvarado, on his triumph on Sunday’s elections, and expressed hope for further cooperation during his to strengthen the cooperation in his future administration.

In a brief official press release, spokeswoman Heather Nauert pointed out that Alvarado’s victory occurred in “free, fair and peaceful” elections that “are a model for the region”.

Nauert said that Costa Rica plays a “key role” as a partner for Washington, promoting “economic prosperity, security and good government practices throughout the continent.”

Alvarado, a journalist and progressive political scientist who is the youngest president-elect in modern Costa Rican history, won Sunday’s elections to defeat the conservative Fabricio Alvarado, 43, an evangelical preacher, former journalist and legislator.
