Biologist and choreographer share Costa Rica’s highest cultural award

The Culture Ministry recognized contributions to the country’s cultural heritage with the Premio Magón on Monday. This year’s award went to choreographer Rogelio López and scientist Rodrigo Gámez.

In a unanimous vote, the jury announced the award would be shared by two people for the first time since 1965.

López is a renowned choreographer who worked mainly at the University of Costa Rica as head of the university dance group, Danza Universitaria, from 1978 to 2006.

Biologist Gámez is the current president of the National Biodiversity Institute. The jury selected him for his contributions in the fields of ecology and biodiversity.

The Magón prize officially will be awarded May 15 in a ceremony in the National Theater.
