Virgin Voyages’ Brilliant Lady Makes Debut in Costa Rica’s Limón Port

The cruise ship Brilliant Lady from Virgin Voyages docked for the first time at Puerto Hernán Garrón Salazar in Limón on January 19, marking a new chapter for cruise tourism here. The arrival highlights Costa Rica’s growing appeal to premium cruise lines that prioritize adult travelers and sustainable practices.

The vessel, which launched in September 2025, carries up to 2,770 passengers and 1,160 crew members across 1,300 cabins. It offers 20 dining venues, over 10 bars and lounges, pools, a spa, and fitness facilities. Virgin Voyages targets adults only, emphasizing tailored trips with modern aesthetics, fine food, health-focused activities, and live shows.

Officials from the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) described the event as a key step in drawing high-value cruise segments. “This arrival stands out for the Costa Rican Caribbean and supports our plan to attract forward-thinking parts of the cruise market,” the ICT noted in a statement. They pointed to the ship’s focus on authentic spots that reflect local character and quality.

Economic benefits play a central role. A 2024 study by Business Research and Economic Advisors (BREA) estimates average passenger spending in Costa Rica at $72.74. Gustavo Alvarado, ICT’s Director of Competitiveness and Tourism Sustainability, said the visit will build supply networks and lift local economies in Limón and nearby areas.

JAPDEVA, the port authority, hosted a plaque exchange to celebrate the inaugural stop. Executive President Sussy Wing called it a sign of Limón’s rise as a forward-looking port that matches industry shifts. “We appreciate the trust and the chance for visitors and crew to experience our province,” Wing added.

The ship avoids single-use plastics, meets high energy standards, uses reusable materials, and aims for net-zero emissions by 2050. These efforts align with Costa Rica’s environmental goals, strengthening its position as a green destination.

The 2025-2026 cruise season looks strong, with 91 ships expected to bring about 117,723 passengers – 68,027 to the Caribbean coast and 49,696 to the Pacific. Brilliant Lady’s itinerary included stops in Miami, Grand Turk, St. John’s, Basseterre, San Juan, Oranjestad, Cartagena, Ocho Rios, and George Town before reaching Limón. It continued to Colón, Panama, after departing at 6 p.m.

Local residents and businesses in Limón welcomed the influx. The port had alot of activity as passengers went to nearby places, from national parks to cultural sites. This debut reinforces Costa Rica’s strategy to mix tourism growth with community gains. As cruise lines like Virgin Voyages expand into Central America, Costa Rica and Limón are ready to host more cruise ships.
