Costa Rica’s Festival de la Luz shines its way through San José

The Festival of Lights, or Festival de la Luz, is one of Costa Rica’s most anticipated holiday events, celebrated each December in the capital city, San José. The event began in 1996 as a way to officially launch the holiday season in Costa Rica, bringing together Costa Ricans of all ages to enjoy a night of lights, music, and community spirit. The festival was initially organized by the Municipality of San José with the goal of creating a festive experience that would embody Costa Rican holiday traditions while also uniting people in a joyful, shared celebration.

The concept quickly gained popularity, transforming the streets of San José into a dazzling display of lights and color. Since its inception, the festival has grown in scale and prominence, drawing hundreds of thousands of attendees from across the country, as well as international tourists. Each year, participants eagerly line the streets along Paseo Colón and Avenida Segunda to watch the illuminated parade floats, marching bands, and dancers that have become the hallmarks of the festival.

Over the years, the festival has incorporated new elements, such as fireworks displays and themed performances, to enhance the visual spectacle. Local businesses, schools, and cultural organizations create elaborate floats, often designed with Costa Rican themes that celebrate the country’s heritage, nature, and festive spirit.

A unique aspect of the festival is its commitment to sustainability. In recent years, many floats and costumes have been made with recycled materials, highlighting Costa Rica’s dedication to environmental consciousness. The Festival of Lights has become not only a holiday tradition but also a point of pride for Costa Ricans, reflecting the country’s values of unity, creativity, and joy during the holiday season.
