Los Sueños a fishing hotspot

The Northern Zone off Guanacaste is dealing with gusty winds, but that has not hampered the production of fish. Lots of dorado and a few sails are being taken.

Striped marlin has also been found in the blue water off the coast. Inshore, the roosterfish have been cooperative, and for just light tackle fun, tons of skipjack tuna are taking anything thrown at them.

Los Sueños has been the hotspot this week, with double digit sails every day. Marlin are hitting and dorado are also mixed in with the bunch. A few boats have been fishing inshore and doing well with grouper, but when 18 or more sails pop in the spread daily, it is hard to fish for anything else.

Fishing has been consistent down south, but in much smaller numbers than they are seeing in Los Sueños. A few double digit reports have been coming in but most boats have been seeing around a half dozen sails per day.

Tuna between 70 and 150 pounds excited anglers for a few days, and snapper fishing in the Golfo Dulce has been good with a couple 35-pound cubera’s being released, as well as other reef fish. Two tarpon in the 100-pound range were taken at Carate.

A fairly good-sized school was reported. Tarpon are not indigenous to the Pacific, but some have slipped through the Panama Canal and set up home in the Pacific.

Some tarpon are being taken at the river mouths on the Caribbean, and the last runs of calba (fat snook) are still coming through. Common snook have been taken in the surf at Tortuguero.
