Green Is Rubbing Off

Costa Rica has had a hard time living up to its eco-friendly reputation, according to a new regional report. The region’s rich biodiversity is concentrated in Costa Rica and Panama, but these countries have the highest numbers of endangered species, with 242 and 324, respectively.

Costa Rica and Panama produce the most garbage per inhabitant, with San José being the biggest waste-producer of any city in the region.

Costa Rica is also the biggest polluter in Latin America, as measured by per-capita emissions of gases that erode the ozone layer.
