Guatemalan Union Leader Killed
GUATEMALA CITY (EFE) – Oneof Guatemala’s top union leaders wasrobbed and fatally injured in a northerncapital neighborhood last the weekend,after having received death threats earlierin the year.Rolando Raquec, assistant secretarygeneral of the United Federation ofIndependent Workers of Guatemala, wasattacked and mortally wounded Sundaynight near his home, allegedly by youthgang members, according to union officials.He died the following day in a capitalhospital.Union head José Pinzón condemnedthe crime and said that Raquec had beenbeaten and received death threats duringtwo break-ins by unknown persons at hishome in March and July, and allegedpolice had not paid any attention to thecomplaints.
