Ten outbound flights were canceled Monday morning and another four inbound flights were rescheduled, according to Silvia Chaves, spokeswoman for Aeris, the company that operates Juan Santamaría International Airport. The airport, 67 km away from the volcano, was closed between 3:30 a.m. and 6:15 a.m. Monday morning.
Juan Santamaría International Airport reopened around 11:30 a.m. Friday after a nearly 18-hour closure. Authorities warned that the reopening could be temporary, depending on future activity at Turrialba Volcano.
Air traffic to and from the Guanacaste beach town of Tamarindo has been temporarily suspended due to growing safety concerns regarding the state of the runway.
