ISTANBUL – Costa Rica’s Nery Brenes won the world indoor men’s 400m title here on Saturday in a championship record of 45.11 seconds. Brenes pulled off the upset while the favorite in the competition placed last.

Demetrius Pinder (45.34 sec) and Chris Brown (45.90) of the Bahamas completed the podium, while Grenada’s world outdoor champion Kirani James could only finish in sixth and last spot. Brenes broke the track record at Ataköy Athletics Area in Istanbul, Turkey.

“I didn’t fear. I knew I was going to do my thing, I was confident in my work. I went out today and I was out to smash those guys. I went and I do my job,” said a beaming Brenes in a post-race interview.
