Costa Rica’s Chinchilla to visit U.S. on Friday to talk drugs

Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla will travel to New York on Friday to meet with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to discuss the fight against drug trafficking and the violence in Central America, an official source said Monday.

Chinchilla will also meet in with officials from Bhutan, a country with which Costa Rica established diplomatic relations last week.

Costa Rica is the first Central American country to establish ties with Bhutan, after having extended diplomatic relations to several Asian countries in the past decade, including China in 2007.

Chinchilla will also meet with former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, who now heads U.N. Women, a United Nations agency for gender equality. Both will address the status of women in the region, Communications Minister Francisco Chacón said.
