Uber Costa Rica to allow riders to pay in cash

Uber Costa Rica will soon allow its customers to pay for their rides in cash, the company announced in a Friday news release.

Beginning Monday, Sept. 26, users can pay their Uber drivers with cash by selecting that payment method within the app’s menu.

The popular ride-sharing app was built on its card payment system. But in recent months the company has started rolling out cash payments in select places across the globe.

Already more than 60 cities worldwide, 15 of them in Latin America, offer the ability to pay with cash, according to the company.

Julie Robinson, Uber’s communications manager in Central America and the Caribbean, said in Friday’s statement that the company can now open itself up to a new market of potential users who may not have debit or credit cards.

“Our main objective is offering flexible options in a secure and trustworthy manner to everyone with just the press of a button, regardless of whether you have access to a credit card or not,” Robinson said.

Some users also don’t want to give out their card information online.

The new payment option is just one of several recent changes in the ever-evolving company. Uber has made international news by experimenting more with driverless cars in the United States and other parts of the world.

The autonomous cars have debuted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Singapore.
