U.S. citizen dies in Costa Rica after car accident

A retired U.S. citizen living in on the central Pacific coast died Sunday morning when his car overturned on a road.

The man is identified in a police report with the last name of Kelly. He was 69, according to the report. The accident occurred at 11 a.m. on the route between Lagunas de Barú and Dominical.

A preliminary report blamed the accident on failed brakes. The car, a Toyota 4Runner, flipped over after the driver lost control. Kelly died at the scene. Three other passengers in the car were uninjured.

A friend of the victim told the daily La Nación that Kelly lived with his wife and 7-year-old son in a house in the Southern Zone city of Pérez Zeledón. Kelly had recently retired and constructed the Costa Rican home.
