First Starbucks to open in Costa Rica on June 20

Residents in Costa Rica can sip Starbucks coffee for the first time here on June 20.

The famous U.S. coffee chain announced it would open its first store in two weeks at the Plaza Avenida Escazú, southwest of San José.

Starbucks has locations in 55 countries, including multiple locations in El Salvador and Guatemala. However, the coffee giant has not yet announced plans for another store in Costa Rica. Some market analysts have wondered whether Starbucks can compete in a culture that already thrives on cheap, locally grown coffee.

Bella Vista Coffee, hailing from Tres Ríos, southeast of San José, will be the first Tico coffee for sale in Starbucks. It was selected because it is grown between 1,350 and 1,500 meters above sea level, and has good quality, flavor and acidity.
