Keylor Navas Leads Pumas Into Liga MX Final Second Leg

Keylor Navas has Pumas UNAM one match from the Liga MX title after delivering the kind of performance Costa Rican fans have watched for more than a decade: calm, sharp and decisive under pressure. The 39-year-old Costa Rican goalkeeper was the central figure in Pumas’ 0-0 draw against Cruz Azul in the first leg of the Clausura 2026 final, keeping the series level despite long stretches of pressure from La Máquina.

The match, played Thursday at Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes in Mexico City, left everything open for today’s return leg at Estadio Olímpico Universitario. Navas made several key saves, including two important stops in the first half, as Cruz Azul pushed for a breakthrough. Pumas struggled to create clear chances before halftime and spent much of the match defending deep, but Navas kept the scoreline intact and gave the university club a clean path into the deciding match.

After the game, Navas said Pumas understood the size of the challenge but would not enter the second leg cautiously. “We’re going all out,” Navas told TUDN after the match, adding that Pumas would rely on its home crowd and look to win the title in front of its fans.

His performance quickly became one of the main talking points in Mexican sports media. Several outlets in Mexico placed Navas at the center of their coverage, with AS México comparing him to fine wine and Récord using the headline “¡Pura Vida!” after his clean sheet. Esto also highlighted the “Keylor factor,” noting that Cruz Azul had more of the match but could not beat the Costa Rican goalkeeper.

Pumas coach Efraín Juárez added to the praise, calling Navas “the best goalkeeper in the history of the continent,” a comment that underlined how much the club has leaned on the former Saprissa, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain star during its title run.

The final also carries a broader weight for both clubs. Pumas is trying to win its first Liga MX title since 2011, while Cruz Azul is chasing its 10th league crown and first since 2021. The matchup is also a rare all-Mexico City final, adding to the attention around the series as the capital prepares for the 2026 World Cup.

For Costa Rica, the spotlight on Navas is familiar but still significant. Years after his peak Champions League nights with Real Madrid, he remains decisive in a major final. At an age when many goalkeepers are winding down, Navas is still shaping title races abroad and keeping his name in the center of Latin American soccer.

Today’s second leg is scheduled for 7 p.m. local time at Estadio Olímpico Universitario. With the series tied 0-0, any win gives either team the Clausura 2026 title. If the aggregate score remains level after 90 minutes, the match will go to extra time and, if needed, a penalty shootout.
