In three days, two earthquakes with magnitude 5-plus shake Costa Rica

For the second time in a week, an earthquake with a magnitude greater than 5 hit Costa Rica’s pacific coast. The earthquake registered a magnitude-5.2, according to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Ovsicori). The tremor was felt at 1:24 p.m. Friday, and with an epicenter in Parrita on the central Pacific coast, near the tourist town of Manuel Antonio. No damage or injuries have been reported.

In San José, shaking was felt for at least 10 seconds. Early reports say the quake was not felt on the Caribbean coast.

On Wednesday, a magnitude-5.3 earthquake hit 27 miles south of Liberia, the capital of the northwestern province of Guanacaste. No damage or injuries were reported during this either. Hundreds of tremors have rattled the region since September 5 when a magnitude-7.6 earthquake in the Nicoya Peninsula shook the country. That quake caused minor injuries and did tens of thousands of dollars in damage. Many aftershocks have followed, but this week’s tremors have been two of the strongest in the past month.

UPDATE: Ovsicori says Friday’s earthquake was caused by a different plate than the ones the magnitude-7.6 earthquake.
