Court to rule Thursday on preventive measures for suspects in border road scandal

A criminal court in San José on Thursday will hold a hearing on appeals by both prosecutors and defenders of six men arrested last Wednesday on charges of embezzlement in a scandal involving the construction of a road along the border with Nicaragua.

Carlos Acosta, former director of the National Roadway Council (CONAVI), is the only one of the six men detained who did not receive preventive measures by the court.

Judges also barred three contractors, Geovanni Baralis, David Castillo and Johnny Muñoz, from leaving the country pending a trial, and they must sign in with the court every 15 days.

CONAVI officials Miguel Ramírez and Manuel Serrano were placed in five months of preventive detention.
