The country’s top skaters and BMX bike riders are set to invade Sabana Park on Saturday, April 23, with a full day of competition.
Costa Rica’s best have been selected after regional semifinals scattered across the country in Puntarenas, Liberia, Pérez Zeledón, Heredia, Escazú, Cartago and Alajuela. Domestic chocolate drink company Johnny’s is the brand sponsor for the five-year-old skate competition.
“It’s a dream come true for us to host this event,” said Johnny’s manager Diana González Rojas at a Tuesday news conference. “We hope these child athletes go past their limits and achieve all their goals with a great showing Saturday.”
BMX national champions Lou Uba and David Soto and skate champion Ignacio Obando will make up the judges table at the event, handing out medals for each of the five categories. There will be three categories in the skate championships: Youth, Pro, and Women’s; as well as two categories in the BMX circuit: Youth and Pro.
González said Tuesday that more than $3,000 will be awarded in prizes to the medal winners.
On top of the skate competition, which lasts from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., there will also be artisan vendors, product displays and a closing concert from Costa Rican band Percance.
More than 2,000 people are expected to attend the championships on Saturday.
