Three more quakes shake Costa Rica

A strong earthquake measuring magnitude-5.2 awoke thousands of Ticos at 1:08 a.m. Thursday.

Its epicenter was located in the canton of Turrubares, San José, near the Pacific region, the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Ovsicori) reported.

The National Seismological Network (RSN) at the University of Costa Rica reported the temblor as magnitude-4.9 with a depth of 57.9 kilometers, located 5 kilometers southeast of Orotina, Alajuela.

Red Cross officials said no damage or injuries were reported.

Many residents said they felt two quakes at 1:08 a.m., but only one occurred. The two shocks felt correspond to two different seismic waves or phases of the same earthquake, the RSN said.

Two aftershocks ocurred in the same area, the first measuring a magnitude-3.2 at 1:33 a.m. and the second a magnitude-2.9 at 5:27 a.m., according to Ovsicori.

Last Tuesday, a magnitude-4.1 quake located near El Guarco Valley, in the province of Cartago, alarmed people throughout the Central Valley.
