Alajuelense, Herediano face off in Costa Rican soccer finals

Alajuelense will face Herediano in Costa Rica’s soccer finals despite its 1-0 loss Wednesday before its fiercest rival, the champion Saprissa.

Alajuelense won the ticket to the finals after having won the first game, Sunday, when it beat the Saprissista team 2-0.

During Wednesday’s game, the Alajuelense team stopped an aggressive Saprissa that started with five forwards in a desperate search for victory. That victory came through a single play by its attacker Deyver Vega.

Although Saprissa pressed, Alajuelense knew how to contain its rival’s initiative and pull off a result that opened the door to the finals.

Hours before, Herediano made the finals with a 1-1 draw with Santos, from the Caribbean town of Guápiles. Santos, a small team with a small fanbase, made it to the semi-finals in a campaign that went beyond its management’s expectations.

Santos opened the scoreboard, in less than a minute, through its scorer Kenneth Dixon, but Herediano caught up six minutes later with a free kick by Randall Azofeifa.

Herediano had won the first match 2-1, and the draw secured its pass to the finals.

The first game of the finals will be next Tuesday, May 19 at 8:15 p.m. and the second game will be Saturday, May 23 at 8 p.m., according to La Nación.
