Sansa starting flights from Costa Rica to Nicaragua, its first international destination

The Costa Rican airline Sansa is launching its first international service next month with flights to Nicaragua’s Emerald Coast, near the popular destinations of Granada, Ometepe Island and San Juan del Sur.

Flights will leave from the Juan Santamaría International Airport near San José and land at a new airport, known as the Costa Esmeralda Airport, 17 kilometers from Tola, Rivas in southwestern Nicaragua. Some flights will stop at the Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia and then continue on to Nicaragua.

The new flights will operate five days a week, Thursday through Monday, starting Nov. 14.

Flights from Liberia to Costa Esmeralda will cost $110 one way, $170 round trip, and flights from San José $130 one way and $218 round trip, plus taxes and fees.

“Sansa is proud to present its first international destination, expanding our network of flights to a total of 13 destinations, now including the Nicaraguan Pacific Coast,” said Mario Zamora, Sansa’s general manager.

“This decision has been made in view of the needs of the market projected for this region, where a new international airport has been built. It’s a place that is creating interesting vacation packages with the aim of invigorating its tourism industry.”

The new flights will be operated with Cessna Grand Caravan 208B planes with a capacity of 12 passengers.

The flights will represent new competition for the Costa Rican carrier Nature Air, which already has international flights to Managua, Nicaragua, and Bocas del Toro, Panama.
