National Stadium watch party canceled for Costa Rica’s World Cup opener

The National Stadium watch party for Costa Rica’s first match of the World Cup has been canceled, organizers said Saturday morning. The event would’ve shown the match between the Ticos and Uruguay at 1 p.m. today on huge LED screens inside the stadium. Joaquín Alvarado, a spokesman for the event, said there were issues with the signal organizers were using to broadcast the event and inclement weather exacerbated the problem..

La Sele fans who bought a ticket for the event will have their money returned in upcoming days. They can seek a reimbursement at the place they bought the ticket from or call the Service Center of La Boletería at 2211-0505.

Costa Rica supporters can still watch the match for free at the “Fan Zones” set up throughout the country. Four 40 meter-wide LED screens have been set up at Plaza de la Democracia in downtown San José; at Avenida Escazú, southwest of San José; at Juan Santamaría Park in Alajuela; and at Cartago’s Central Park.

The Fan Zones will show every match of the tournament. Tickets are free but spaces are limited. Those interested in attending any of the four locations must request a ticket (one per person) at the website: www.fanzonedelasele.com.

The match also will be broadcast on TV stations 6 and 7 and on Radio Columbia and Radio Monumental.
