Damage Forces Avenida 8 to Close

Less than a month after Avenida 8 reopened with a newly paved surface, city officials closed the route once again because of damage caused by heavy rainfall.

A spokesman for the city explained that the road was paved during a period of heavy rainfall, causing the underlying soil to shift and the road to cave in. Though the damage will not affect passing traffic, city officials began repairing the road quickly, as the construction project remains under guarantee.

The road will be closed through Monday at the intersection of Calle 7 and Avenida 8.

Avenida 8 is the principal route for travelers heading west through downtown San José. It has been intermittently closed throughout the past year as workers resurfaced it as part of a three-phase project. Officials expect the third stage, which will close the road from just south of the Turrialba bus station on Calle 13 heading east toward Avenida 6, to begin in January.
