Aftershocks Damage 100 Homes in Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA – Approximately one dozen aftershocks from the magnitude 5.5 earthquake that rocked Honduras last weekend have damaged nearly 100 houses, the head of the emergency management agency said Sunday.

Emergency management chief Marco Burgos told reporters that the earthquake hit Yoro province on Saturday, damaging about 90 houses and a colonial church. The temblor also left cracks in the walls of several schools and other structures.

The earthquake was followed by some one dozen aftershocks that had magnitudes of between 3 and 4.5, and rocked northern, eastern, central and southern Honduras, authorities said.

The 12-second earthquake on Sept. 15 caused panic among residents and was felt the most in the towns of Playa Grande, Nuevo Paraiso and La Guadalupe de Marale, in Francisco Morazán province, and in Liquigue, in Yoro province.
