Sala Garbo Hosts Peace Film Festival

The Costa Rican section of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom is sponsoring a Peace Film Festival this weekend at Sala Garbo theater in San José. Tonight, the award-winning Costa Rica-made film “Uranium 238” takes a look at depleted uranium weapons and the international campaign to abolish them, with a Q-and-A session led by the film’s narrator, Isabelle Macdonald. And “Hidden in Plain Sight” examines the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (formerly the School of the Americas), a combat training school for Latin American soldiers in Fort Benning, Georgia. The Q-and-A session will be led by Rita Calvert.

Saturday night, “Women Crossing Borders” looks at the problems facing Nicaraguan and Panamanian women who come to Costa Rica for the coffee harvest; filmmaker Ana Lucía Faerron will be on hand for the Q-and-A. And “A Force More Powerful” documents nonviolent movements around the globe, followed by words from Justice and Peace Vice Minister Milena Sanabria. Films are in English with Spanish subtitles or in Spanish with English subtitles.

Showings start at 7 p.m. both nights, followed by a reception for audience questions and comments. A peace jam will add music. Tickets cost ¢2,000 ($3.80). The theater is off Paseo Colón on Avenida 2, Calle 28.
