13 European Tourists Robbed at Tikal Ruins

GUATEMALA CITY – Masked men armed with machetes, rifles and shotguns robbed 13 European tourists who were visiting northern Guatemala’s TikalArchaeologicalPark, but no one was injured in the incident, officials said Feb. 24.

The tourists, whose nationalities have not been released, were robbed of all their belongings, Deputy Interior Minister Eduardo Gonzalez said, adding that the crime occurred as the visitors headed to Temple I at Tikal, which was the cradle of Maya civilization.

The masked robbers struck as the tour group was being led by a guide, then fled into the jungle.

The deputy interior minister said the assailants were members of a gang of poachers that operates in Peten province.
