Former Minister Mourned

Rodrigo Madrigal Nieto, Foreign Minister during President Oscar Arias’ first administration (1986-1990), passed away at age 82 in October.

As minister, Madrigal was a key player in negotiating and drafting the Central American Peace Plan that earned Arias the 1987 Nobel Peace Prize.Madrigal’s extensive career included working as a journalist and a lawmaker. In 1988, he founded and presided the Foundation for Peace and Democracy (FUNPADEM).

Madrigal, a firm believer in Central American integration, received scores of awards in his lifetime, including the Distinguished Central American Award from the Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration (SIECA).
