MANAGUA – The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) last week authorized a $71.2 million credit to Nicaragua to finance the construction and operation of a new wind-powered electrical plant in the southern pacific department of Rivas.
The plant will be built and run by the energy company Wind-Power Consortium Amayo S.A., which has plans to build the energy plant using 19 wind turbines to generate 39.9 megawatts of “clean energy.”
The project is projected to create 80 jobs to construct the plant and 18 technical positions to operate it once it’s done.
The wind plant will also help to start covering Nicaragua’s energy deficit, which hovers between 60-100 megawatts, and help reduce the country’s dependency on oil imports, which represent $11 million a year.
