Limón Carnival Kicks Off on Cultures Day

Cultures Day will be celebrated in style Oct. 12, when the Caribbean port of Limón crowns its queens and kicks off its 57th Carnival, a 10-day party held every October.

Fireworks will follow the coronations, along with a “concert of lights,” event promoters said.

Carnival organizers hope for 15,000-20,000 visitors a day, and up to 50,000 for the celebration’s big event, an Oct. 21 parade of color and costume through the multicultural port city’s streets. The parade starts at 10 a.m.

That night at 8, the Jamaican band P.O.K. will give a free, open-air concert in Limón’s Parque Vargas. Throughout the festival, 300 special police will provide security, promoters said.

Area beaches and Limón proper will host at least four other free concerts Oct. 14, 15, 19 and 22, covering a “tropical” musical range from salsa and merengue to ranchera and, of course, the Caribbean standard, calypso.

New this year is the “First Grand Car Show of the Caribbean” (Oct. 15). There will also be two children’s festivals (Oct. 13 and 22) and a show of dancing horses (Oct. 15).

Check the Calendar pages for a complete schedule of events, or call the Limón Carnival Commission at 758-0830.
