Contemporary Photo Exhibit Under Way

Should all those who take photos be considered photographers? If photographers don t produce their own photos, should they still be considered the authors?

Photo Septiembre 2006 aims to toss around these and other questions floating inside the heads of contemporary photographers, according to a statement from Galería Jacob Karpio, located in a picturesque neighborhood in downtown San José.

The exhibit was inaugurated the evening of Sept. 26 with a chic party featuring Indian and Latin cuisine and electro-fusion music by DJs Esteban Howell and Santos y Zurdo.

Photo Septiembre is not to be confused with Fotoseptiembre, a biannual international photo festival started in 1993 by photo research and promotion center Centro de la Imagen in Mexico (TT, Sept. 9, 2005). Fotoseptiembre was brought to Costa Rica in 1998, and is coordinated by the photography department of the Colegio Universitario de Alajuela (CUNA).

Participating artists in Photo Septiembre come from Argentina, Nicaragua, Colombia, Panama, Venezuela, Spain, Italy, Russia, Iceland, Germany, the United States and Costa Rica.

Works by Costa Rican artists include Priscilla Monge s famous coffee cup series and renowned photographer Jaime David Tischler s documentary sampling of small moments in today s Israel. Donna Conlon from Panama captured images of hands clutching plastic grocery bags, while Argentinean Maxi Acuña cut and burned designs onto his photos.

The exhibit will be showing Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., until Nov. 22.

Galería Jacob Karpio, named after its owner, who also operates the Karpio and  Facchini Gallery in Miami, is 50 meters west of the northern end of the Legislative Assembly in downtown San José. For information, call 257-7963.
