Outdoor Art Festival Returns to San Pedro

Coming soon to an eastern suburb of San José: 500 artists from Central America, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Venezuela and Mexico.

The 11th annual Outdoor Art Festival will take over San Pedro’s Plaza Roosevelt Nov. 29 through Dec. 3, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Besides browsing the 150 booths of paintings, sculptures and photographs, visitors can expect live music from University of Costa Rica bands and others each evening at 5.

This is the biggest such event in Central America, according to its organizer, Ulíses Castillo, owner of the Galería de Ulíses art gallery and frame shop in San Pedro.

“The festival was born 11 years ago, on the street, with about 25 artists,” Castillo said, adding that the event has been growing every year since its inception.

According to Castillo, among the participating artists will be some of the biggest names in the Costa Rican art scene: Leda Astorga, Rodolfo Stanley, Felo García, Rafa Fernández and a host of others.

The energetic Castillo also organizes an outdoor art fair each April in the western suburb of Escazú, with hundreds of stalls usually filling the San Rafael soccer field.

Plaza Roosevelt is behind San Pedro’s American Outlet Mall, on the south side. Castillo said parking for festivalgoers will be offered at the mall. For more information on festival activities, call Galería de Ulíses at 225-5660.
