Museum Entry Free After Leak Forces Wing Closure

The NationalMuseum closed its pre-Columbian history wing May 29 for fear of visitor injuries after significant water leakage, according to a statement from the museum.

“During the tropical storm, water leaked into the museum, wetting the floor,” said museum representative Wendy Segura.

About 170 indigenous relics had to be removed because of the torrential rains of last week’s Tropical Storm Alma.

The room is partially open, but some of the artifacts remain off-limits, according to Segura. The museum will continue to close the wing when it rains until the leaks are fixed.

To make up for the inconvenience, the museum plans to offer free admission whenever the wing is closed, Segura said.

On drizzly days, patrons can visit the rest of the museum’s wings, including the GoldTower, the Costa Rican History Hall, The Colonial House, The Secret Garden, the Passion Flower Exhibit and the Hector Gamboa Library.

The museum does not yet know when the Pre-Columbian Room will be fully reopened.

“We don’t have an exact date,” Segura said. “We are (partially) reopening the exhibit for now, and later we will reopen the rest.”
