A gala benefit concert will be held Aug. 23at San José’s Laurence Olivier Theater in celebration of the Little TheatreGroup’s 60th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of the Tom and Norman Home.

Violinist José Aurelio Castillo of the NationalSymphony and U.S. cellist Nicholas Anderson will donate their talent to raise muchneeded funds for the home, which shelters homeless and incapacitated seniors inthe Caribbean-slope town of Guápiles, as well as to show their support for thelongest-running English-language theater group in Central and South America.They will perform a mixed program of duos for violin and cello, including,among other pieces, the Handel-Halvorsen Passacaglia, Tico composer BenjamínGutiérrez’s Toccatina and “Kangaroos’ Hoedown” by Anderson’s brother, composerTimothy J. Anderson.

Castillo has made numerous appearances asa soloist with the National Symphony and other Central American orchestras, aswell as performing frequently as a guest member of the Berlin Philharmonic andWorld Philharmonic in Tokyo, while Anderson is an acclaimed recitalist andconcerto soloist who has performed throughout the world.

A longtime friend of the late Tom Johnstonand Norman Brown, founders of the Tom and Norman Home, Anderson used to giveconcerts at their homes in Berkeley, California, and here in Costa Rica, where hislove affair with this country first began.

He and Castillo became friends and havebeen performing together for the past three years. In 2007, they started givingduo concerts, including one at the National Theater with the Camerata San José.This led to an invitation to give duo concerts in New York City.

“We are delighted to be performing togetheragain in Costa Rica and feel that this concert will please classical musicconnoisseurs as well as those who enjoy lighter melodies,” Anderson said.

The cellist will be performing on what hecalls the love of his life, the magnificent “Count Marcello,” built by thegreat Italian cello maker Matteo Goffriller in 1697.

The concert will take place at 2:30 p.m., followedby a bocas andcash-bar reception, at the Laurence Olivier Theater at Avenida 2, Calle 28,next to Sala Garbo.
