Tourism Institute Hopes for High Limón Festival Turnout

The Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) expects a turnout of 8,000 at the first Caribbean Lights Festival Sept. 1 in the Caribbean port city Limón.

The festival will include a concert by the group Marfil, a parade, face painting and cheerleader performances.

“We want our society to take back the space that has been lost, enjoying an activity where liquor won’t be sold. This event is for the family,” said Limón Mayor Eduardo Barboza.

The event, which is being sponsored by the ICT and the Municipality of Limón, will promote what the city has to offer tourists.

“The city of Limón has an enormous potential for tourism, and it’s time for them to show national and foreign tourists what they’ve got to offer with events like Caribbean Lights,” said Tourism Minister Carlos Benavides, who plans to attend the event.

Benavides said he hopes the festival will be held for years to come. It is the Tourism Institute’s latest attempt to jump-start the country’s regional tourism potential.
