Don’t Get Caught in the Rain: Costa Rica’s Weather Forecast for This Week

The Instituto Meteorológico Nacional (IMN) is forecasting variable conditions across Costa Rica this week, with weak trade winds driving heat, humidity, and afternoon storm activity through midweek before stronger winds shift the weather pattern toward the end of the week.

Today, partly cloudy skies cover the South Pacific early in the morning with a chance of weak and isolated showers. Cloud cover builds over the Pacific slope and Central Valley through the afternoon, and rains continue in the mountainous zones of the Caribbean. By late afternoon and early evening, isolated short-duration showers with electrical storms become likely across the Central and South Pacific and may push into the Nicoya Peninsula.

The IMN has issued warnings for showers and thunderstorms through the week, driven by decreased trade winds and elevated humidity levels.

What to Expect This Week

Through Wednesday, low trade winds keep mornings hot and humid with mostly clear skies. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms develop in the Central Valley, Central and South Pacific, and the Nicoya Peninsula. A pressure system building over Central America from Thursday onward strengthens trade winds to moderate and strong levels across central and northern areas, pushing cloud cover and rain activity toward the Caribbean and the North Zone.

Guanacaste stays mostly clear but sees winds picking up considerably in the second half of the week. The Central Valley and Pacific slopes can expect afternoon shower chances throughout the period. Caribbean skies remain clear to partly cloudy Monday through Thursday, with scattered showers possible over the weekend. The South Pacific sees isolated overnight showers with partial cloud cover through the period. Light rains are possible in the Caribbean and North Zone on Saturday and Sunday.

Extreme Temperature Forecast

The IMN lists expected high temperatures for the April 6 to 12 period at 39°C in the North Pacific, 35°C in the North Zone, and 32°C in both the Central Valley and along the Caribbean coast. Overnight lows dip to 13°C in the Central Valley and 19°C in the North Pacific.
