The Legislative Assembly shot down a motion on a bill that would have allowed the National Insurance Institute (INS) to offer services outside Costa Rica’s borders.
The motion, which was presented on the law that will open the insurance industry to private competition to implement the Central American Free-Trade Agreement with the United States (CAFTA), was voted down by the National Liberation Party (PLN) legislators, as well as the Libertarians.
INS head Guillermo Constenla had told The Tico Times in September that he was hoping the new law would allow him to take the company regional.
