Ancient Mayan Site in Guatemala Joins UNESCO World Heritage List

On Monday, UNESCO added the 1,700-year-old archaeological site of Tak’alik Ab’aj in Guatemala to its World Heritage List. Located in a tropical forest, Tak’alik Ab’aj was a major commercial hub inhabited first by the Olmecs and later the Maya during the transition from Olmec to early Mayan civilization. According to UNESCO, the site played a key role in this cultural shift, containing artifacts and architecture fusing elements of both. With its cosmological layout and continued sacred importance for visiting Indigenous groups, Tak’alik Ab’aj provides invaluable insight into Mesoamerica’s formative period and joins Antigua, Tikal and Quirigua as Guatemala’s World Heritage Sites.
