Monument to Commemorate Victims of Sept. 11 Tragedy

A monument designed by U.S. artistRoland Hockett will be unveiled tomorrowin the park next to the Costa Rican-North American Cultural Center, inSabana Norte on the west end of San José,commemorating the tragedy that occurredthree years ago in the United States.Although the Sept. 11, 2001, terroristattack occurred on U.S. soil, Costa Ricansand citizens from all over the world foundthemselves directly affected by the deathsof friends and loved ones, U.S. Embassyofficials said in a statement.The commemoration, which begins at10 a.m., is expected to include San JoséMayor Johnny Araya, Foreign MinisterRoberto Tovar and U.S. EmbassyBusiness Manager Douglas Barnes,among others.The park, formerly named the ParqueGeneral Cañas, has been renamed Parque11 de Setiembre de 2001, according to theCosta Rican-American Chamber ofCommerce (AmCham), one of the organizersof tomorrow’s event.The monument represents a jointeffort and collaboration between the U.S.Embassy, AmCham, the Costa Rican-North American Cultural Center and U.S.citizens living in Costa Rica.Tomorrow evening, people are invitedto participate in a circle of candlelight atBig Mike’s Dining Club, in Los Anonos,Escazú, to remember the victims of Sept.11, 2001. Participants are invited to sharetheir art, writings, memories, music, sorrow,anger, joy and hope.The circle will come together at 7p.m. For info, call Lynne Aune at 282-3759.
