João Fonseca will begin the North American hard-court season in position to earn a seed at the 2026 US Open, with the Brazilian confirmed for a Cincinnati Open field featuring nearly every leading player on the ATP Tour. Fonseca is ranked No. 27, placing him inside the 32-player seeding line for the final Grand Slam of the year. His place is far from secure, however, with several players separated by relatively small margins in the rankings immediately behind him.
The 19-year-old is scheduled to compete in Cincinnati, where match play will run from August 11 through August 23. His performance in Ohio could have a direct effect on whether he arrives in New York as a seed or becomes one of the most dangerous unseeded players in the US Open draw.
Why a US Open Seed Matters for João Fonseca
The top 32 players in a Grand Slam draw are seeded, keeping them away from one another during the opening two rounds. For Fonseca, that protection would reduce the possibility of facing Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Novak Djokovic or another leading contender at the start of the tournament.
It would not guarantee an easy route. Players seeded between No. 25 and No. 32 can be drawn against one of the highest seeds in the third round. It would, however, give Fonseca a better opportunity to settle into the tournament before facing one of the favorites. Fonseca currently sits ahead of Arthur Rinderknech, Ugo Humbert, Tomás Martín Etcheverry, Alejandro Tabilo and Brandon Nakashima in the rankings race around the cutoff. Results throughout the summer could quickly change that order.
Cincinnati Points Could Decide Fonseca’s Position
Fonseca will have 50 ranking points to defend in Cincinnati after reaching the third round on his tournament debut in 2025. He defeated China’s Buyunchaokete 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in the opening round and advanced past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina before losing 6-3, 6-4 to French qualifier Terence Atmane.
Matching that result would allow Fonseca to protect those points. A run into the fourth round or quarterfinals would strengthen his position before the US Open, while an early defeat could allow the players behind him to close the gap. Fonseca should receive a first-round bye in Cincinnati if he remains among the tournament’s 32 seeds. He would then need to win his opening match to reach the same stage he achieved last year.
The Cincinnati field includes Sinner, Alcaraz, Zverev, Djokovic, Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz and Daniil Medvedev, along with several players competing directly with Fonseca for US Open seeding positions.
Fonseca Reached Wimbledon Third Round
Fonseca enters the hard-court swing after reaching the third round at Wimbledon for the second consecutive year. Playing as the No. 24 seed, he defeated Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-3 in the first round before beating Jesper de Jong 6-1, 7-5, 6-4. His run ended with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 loss to Roman Safiullin.
Although the result fell short of a second-week appearance, Fonseca again showed that his game can produce results away from clay. He has now reached the third round at Wimbledon twice despite having limited experience on grass at tour level. The focus now returns to hard courts, the surface on which Fonseca won the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals and produced several of the early results that accelerated his rise through the rankings.
Brazil’s Leading Player Faces an Important Summer
Fonseca has already established himself as Brazil’s highest-ranked men’s player and one of the leading young names on the ATP Tour. A seeded place at the US Open would mark another step in that progression. He made his US Open main-draw debut in 2025 after reaching the third round in Cincinnati and will return to New York with greater expectations this year.
The initial US Open player field is scheduled to be revealed on August 20. The final seedings will depend on the ATP rankings used before the main draw is completed. Fonseca currently controls his position, but the margin is narrow enough to make every hard-court result important. A productive Cincinnati Open could secure his place among the seeds and give Brazil one of the players to watch when the US Open begins.
