Hats, scarves, coats and gloves were broken out of their drawers and put to good use this week by residents of San José and mountainous areas of the country as they braced themselves against a cold front that has created the lowest temperatures Costa Rica has seen so far this year, according to National Meteorological Institute (IMN) meteorologist Norman Vega.
Tuesday was the coldest November day the country has seen in 25 years, IMN meteorologist Werner Stolz told the daily La Nación.
The temperature in San José dropped to 13 degrees Celsius (55 degrees Fahrenheit), while the Pacific port city of Puntarenas was whipped by 65 kilometer-per-hour winds. Strong winds up to 40 kilometers per hour were also recorded in Alajuela, northwest of San José, and Pavas, west of San José, Vega said.
These winds left approximately 150,000 people in the greater metropolitan area without electricity Tuesday, according to La Nación.
Temperatures were expected to begin to rise gradually through tomorrow.
