This day in Costa Rican history: Pope John Paul II visits

Tuesday marks the 38th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s historic visit to Costa Rica, an event that left an indelible mark on the nation’s history. As the first pope to visit Costa Rica, John Paul II drew one of the largest crowds the country has ever seen. Over half a million people gathered at La Sabana Park in San José, eager to welcome the pontiff and listen to his speech. The atmosphere was charged with emotion, as people from all walks of life came together in unity and faith.

Pope John Paul II’s visit wasn’t limited to just one location. He also made stops at the metropolitan cathedral, where he offered prayers and blessings, and at the children’s hospital, where his compassion and care for the sick and vulnerable were evident. His presence brought hope and inspiration to many, particularly the children and their families, who were deeply moved by his visit.

As the popemobile made its way through the streets of San José, thousands lined the roads, waving flags and cheering in admiration. The visit of Pope John Paul II remains a powerful memory for those who witnessed it, symbolizing a moment of spiritual significance and national pride for Costa Rica
