Rincón de la Vieja Volcano registers Monday evening eruptions

Rincón de la Vieja Volcano in northern Costa Rica erupted twice Monday, sending columns of gas 1.5 to 2 km into the skies above its crater.

According to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI), the first eruption began at 5 p.m., while the second occurred 45 minutes later.

A video shared by the organization shows the 5 p.m. event:

The National Emergency Commission (CNE) has not reported damage caused by the eruptions, though the government body typically asks area communities to exercise increased caution in the hours after volcanic activity.

The volcano has remained active throughout 2020 and is monitored constantly by OVSICORI.

Rincón de la Vieja Volcano is located in the eponymous national park in the Guanacaste province. The National Park attracts visitors due to its unique flora and fauna, waterfalls and geothermal activity.

A trail to the crater summit has remained closed in recent years due to volcanic activity.

The area also houses the La Pailas power plant, which harnesses geothermal energy from the volcano.
