Pair of tremors rattles Costa Rica on both coasts

How did  you sleep last night?

A pair of tremors — the first on the Caribbean coast, and the second on the Pacific — shook Costa Rica on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.

While neither caused substantial damage, both quakes were strong enough to be felt in the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) surrounding the capital city of San José.

The first tremor, of magnitude 5.3, occurred at 10:58 p.m. Tuesday with an epicenter near the town of Cahuita, Limón. It was caused by movement of the Caribbean Plate, a mostly oceanic tectonic plate

The second earthquake, of magnitude 5.2 at 5:23 a.m. Wednesday, had an epicenter near the Pacific city of Quepos, Puntarenas. It was caused by subduction of the Cocos tectonic plate.
