Those who dream of seeing a live performance at The Metropolitan Opera need not be discouraged by the time and money required to travel the 2,220 miles from Costa Rica to New York City. A new season of The Met: Live in HD begins Oct. 9 with Richard Wagner’s “Das Rheingold.” All 12 of the season’s operas will be broadcast live from The Metropolitan Opera in high definition on the big screen at the Eugene O’Neill Theater in eastern San José’s Barrio Dent.
The operas are filmed in New York City by an immense crew operating 13 cameras and recording in 5:1 surround sound to create an experience that is almost as memorable as being in the Lincoln Center itself.
The season’s lineup will include seven revivals of previous seasons and five new productions. Opera devotees can expect to enjoy interpretations by such celebrated stars as U.S. soprano Renée Fleming and mezzo-soprano Susan Graham, Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo, Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez and German bass René Pape.
In addition to “Das Rheingold,” Modest Mussorgsky’s “Boris Godunov,” Giuseppe Verdi’s “Don Carlo,” John Adams’ “Nixon in China,” Gioachino Rossini’s “Le Comte Ory” and Wagner’s “Die Walküre” make up the five new productions for this season.
Owned and operated by the Costa Rican-North American Cultural Center, the recently renovated Eugene O’Neill Theater is one of more than 12,000 theaters in 44 countries around the world that will present operas this season through the The Met: Live in HD program.
Tickets, which may be purchased at the cultural center’s box office, run $35 for general admission and $30 for students and senior citizens. Season tickets for all 12 operas cost $375 general admission and $310 for students and seniors. For more information, call the cultural center at 2207-7554 or visit www.centrocultural.cr.
