Costa Rica falls to Peru, 1-0, in Gold Cup warmup

Costa Rica fell to Peru, 1-0, in La Sele’s lone warmup match prior to the 2019 Gold Cup.

Christian Cueva’s 53rd-minute goal on a Peruvian counterattack was the winning margin in the international friendly:

While La Sele pushed for a late equalizer, goalkeeper Pedro Gallese stopped chances from Mayron George and Álvaro Saborío to preserve the South American victory.

La Sele has one victory and three losses in four games under new manager Gustavo Matosas.

Following the match, the Costa Rican Soccer Federation announced its roster for the 2019 Gold Cup. La Sele begins its campaign against Nicaragua at the National Stadium in La Sabana on June 16.

Most notably, star goalkeeper Keylor Navas is not on the 23-player roster.

Elsewhere in CONCACAF on Wednesday:

  • Mexico defeated Venezuela, 3-1.
  • The United States lost to Jamaica, 1-0.
  • Honduras tied Paraguay, 1-1.
  • Trinidad & Tobago tied Japan, 0-0.

The 2019 Gold Cup begins June 15.
