Tico wins prestigious scholarship to study at UNC

A standout Tico student will represent Costa Rica in the United States as a Morehead-Cain scholar.

Julian Goldner, a Lincoln School senior, was selected by the admissions committee at the University of North Carolina for the award. The scholarship will fund his gap year abroad and tuition at the public university in Chapel Hill.

“The Morehead-Cain Scholarship covers all expenses for four years of undergraduate study at UNC–Chapel Hill,” the scholarship webpage reads. “It also features a distinctive program of summer enrichment experiences designed to stretch students beyond their comfort zones.”

The scholarship committee selects well-rounded individuals who demonstrate leadership, character, scholarship and physical vigor.

According to his bio on the Morehead-Cain website, Goldner is an avid gardener and founded a business that produces biodegradable flower pots. He is interested in studying biomedical engineering.

International students can apply for the Morehead Cain scholarship if they are on-track to graduate and a competitive applicant to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The student’s high school must also submit an endorsement.

Semifinalists for the scholarship conduct a video interviews, and finalists are invited to a selection weekend in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

The class of 2023 includes 35 students from North Carolina, 30 from elsewhere in the United States and 10 from outside the United States.

Since 2000, 14 Morehead-Cain Scholars have won Rhodes Scholarships, according to the scholarship’s website.
