Pic of the Day: Costa Rica opposing Nicolás Maduro

Costa Rica joined a dozen other nations of the Lima Group this week in saying it will not recognize the Venezuelan government under Nicolás Maduro.

The Lima Group asserts Maduro’s new term is the product of an illegitimate election.

In the above photo, Venezuela’s Foreign Minister, Jorge Arreaza (C), talks with Costa Rican representative Danilo Gonzalez (R) during a meeting to present a protest letter at the Foreign Ministry in Caracas on Jan. 9. With the exception of Mexico, the Lima Group — made up of 14 mostly Latin American countries — has urged Maduro to renounce his second term and deliver power to parliament, a demand Caracas blasted as incitement to stage a coup d’etat.

Maduro will begin his second mandate today, Jan. 10, plagued by accusations of illegitimacy and increasing international isolation in a country crippled by an economic crisis.
