Fares on new train route to Cartago set at ₡550

The Public Services Regulatory Authority (ARESEP) approved an increase of ₡55 for the fare of a new train route from San José to the province of Cartago. The train is expected to begin service in coming days.

The initial fare approved last week was ₡495 ($0.99), but ARESEP set a new fare of ₡550 ($1.10) after accepting an appeal by the Costa Rican Railroad Institute (INCOFER).

Miguel Carabaguíaz, president of INCOFER, rejected the first fare because it would not have covered operating expenses.

On Thursday, the regulatory agency said in a press release that the updated fare was set after peforming a recalculation of fuel consumption costs according to data submitted by INCOFER.

The new fare will take effect when published in the official newspaper La Gaceta.
